About this deal

A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines, there is no set formula for a Lesley Pearse novel although strong heroines and difficult circumstances are pervasive. Every year I find myself extremely fortunate to be gifted an early addition of the latest Lesley Pearse book to review.

By the next evening, mum and kids are staying in a women's refuge and major plans to ensure a happier future are in motion. Before I jump into this review, I must stress that Ms Pearse doesn't shy away from the distressing themes in Betrayal. I initially felt for her and her children, no woman should have to be in a violent and toxic relationship. She could not do it for herself, even when they arrive at the women's refuge that a specialist solicitor has gotten them into, Eve's sense of denial is such that she finds it hard to relate her circumstances to the other women there. The hardships, traumas, close friends and lovers from those early years were inspiration for her beloved novels.Gone were the chapters where I was growing a bit bored (I hate saying that but that was the way the book was making me feel) and bam here we have an unpredicted twist that really shook things up. The bleakness of her life with Don and her subsequent struggles are lightened not only by her own courage and determination, but by the strength of the other characters in the book, who are a testament to the fundamental good heartedness of most people. She is naturally reserved having being brought up not to tell tales but finally she garners enough courage to go to the police and report what has been happening to her. I had a terrible day at work and when you began nagging me about decorating the lounge, I just saw red.

Every decision she makes is for the best life for her children and she have to admire her stern and tenacity in such terrible times. This is an emotional roller coaster read that had me fully invested from beginning through to the end. A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget. The "happy ending marriage" was unnecessary, it would have been better if it had ended after the court case, knowing that everyone could go home they were safe. But it’s Lesley Pearse and I will always read anything that she publishes and the beginning and end of Betrayal made up for a lacklustre middle. They had only been back from their honeymoon in Spain for a week when he hit her for the first time.
